My FAVORITE Knitted Seam - THE BRAIDED SEAM

Monday, August 06, 2018

If you follow me on Instagram, you know how excited I was that I figured out this seam! When I am knitting a sweater, I want it to be perfect and I get all excited when I'm done knitting it. Then, I have to seam it together 😖It makes me SO nervous because some seams can look really messy and make your whole project look cheap or tacky, and after all the hours you spend to make it, who wants that? So, I wanted to make a seam that looks good on ANYTHING and is easy to do. I tried so many different ways to get the braided look..inside out 3 needle bind off and a crochet hook were the closest, but they were still too bulky and left bumps on the back side. After spending all day(I wish I were joking) trying out different things, I FINALLY figured it out and I have to say, I am so happy with the result. I have a VIDEO TUTORIAL on how to do it right here: https://youtu.be/2P5Wez8RSVE

You will need a tapestry needle.

RS(Right Sides) are facing up. You should have a tail that is connected on your front piece.

STEP 1
With your tapestry needle, go through your first stitch on your last knitted row(two bars) from right to left. Pull yarn through.
 STEP 2
Now, go through your front piece on the outer most edge(two bars) from the top to the bottom. Pull yarn through.
*This is the braid that will be showing*
 STEP 3
Go through your next braid from the bottom to the top.
Pull yarn through.
 STEP 4
On your back piece, go through the next stitch(2 bars)
from the left to the right. Pull yarn through.
STEP 5
Go through the SAME braid on your front piece
from the top to bottom.
REPEAT STEPS 3-5

That's it! Pretty simple right? Here is the finished look:

This is a shoulder seam, so I put my yarn to the back and weaved my ends then did this again on the other shoulder.

Please share with me a photo of your project using this braided seam on Instagram. #braidedseam
